A Master (of Disaster?)

Yesterday afternoon I successfully defended my Internship Report for my Master of Arts degree in History. Just a few grammatical and usage changes and clarifications to the document and a return of project materials and I am finished.

My committee members were great, and, strangely, I experienced a bit more sadness at the completion of this process than I anticipated. I think it has something to do with the ending of that phase of my life... no longer a college or graduate student. Now I can go and make something more of myself and do my family, friends and professors proud.

Thanks to everyone for their support throughout this long, long, long tedious process.

Confessions

A friend posted a blog describing her newfound enjoyment of life and the things she enjoys, including those that she shunned because they did not fit into a certain ideal or lifestyle. Her blog made me think. There are a number of things about me that I try and keep to myself. However, in the spirit of self-expression, here are a few different and surprising things about me.

- I was an uber nerd in middle school. The kind of nerd that nerds picked on. My mother taught at the same school as me, which only helped with the beatings, and nobody liked me my 6th grade year, not even the person who would be my best friend through high school and college. I learned some self-survival skills, such as pretending to not know the answer to questions and trying to blend into the background. I still "play dumb" at times.

- In the same line as the previous, I am quiet and will often not say much more than a quiet "Hi." to people I know or meet because I am afraid that as soon as I start to talk, they will go "NERD!" and Rochambeau me or something. Old habits die hard.

- I went to college to get an education, and to graduate school to get a girl. I was very interested in a particular female, and she was engaged to be married. She broke it off. Then I found out she was going to grad school, and, knowing I had the potential to succeed in classes, I decided that I could make it through. She quit 4 weeks in. And she was dating the fire department. I was devastated...

I got to know Janel the next semester. The rest is history- almost. I am defending for my history master's degree next week.

- Finally, I often doubt that I can do things I am tasked with doing. After three years at the magazine, I still feel like I'm a phony and someone will come along any second and call me on it...

Tune in next time...

A New Beginning

Well, for those of you who followed me over from my old journal address, thanks. For those who didn't, well, you don't know what you're missing.

The reasons for this change of scenery are numerous, but this was precipitated by the ownership of the previous site. Suffice it to say that whoever hurts my wife will no longer be treated as a person of regard. 'Nuff said.

At any rate, thanks for following me over and future postings will be more fun or insightful.

Oh, and the secrets promised in my other blog... I will let you know when I figure them out!

Take care.
